Just Why Should You Start to Practice Yoga?
Why should you start to practice yoga?
Like many things, the reason normally starts because there is a need that requires a solution. There can be many reasons why a person may feel the need to follow a discipline but by recognising that need a very important step has been taken.
It has to be said that there are those who take up yoga or some other fitness regime because it is the latest fashion, perhaps being championed by a celebrity. If that is the reason then there is a very good chance that the person concerned will be moving on very quickly to the next fad when it comes along.
Yoga should not be classed as the latest fad; it has been around for a very long time with roots firmly implanted in well practiced routines and disciplines.
Whether the need you have is for body fitness or for relaxation of the mind, try yoga but do approach it with an open mind and start with the idea that the benefits are long term and not just a quick fix.
A good retailer selling yoga supplies online will not only be able to supply you with the basic exercise equipment but also access to quality yoga books, yoga DVDs and yoga videos.
Yoga For Beginners - Seven Life Lessons Learned From Practicing Yoga
Have you heard of the expression "a journey of 1000 miles begins with the first step"?
I've had the good fortune to practice yoga, on and off for over 18 years and teach it, for nearly five years. I would like to take 10 minutes of your time, to share seven personal life lessons I have learned from practicing yoga. They are presented in no particular order - my hope is my life lessons inspires you to take-up yoga.
Seven Personal Life Lessons Learned From Yoga
1. Yoga Is A Gift I Give To Myself
Every time, I sit on my yoga mat, I am reminded of the trials and blessings which led to me practicing yoga. I first started yoga when pregnant with my eldest daughter (who will be 18 soon.) I used to work as a Probation Officer for a busy inner London Borough, so coming home to practice yoga was my way to unwind and reconnect with my unborn baby. Since then, yoga, in some shape or the other has played a role in my personal life journey.
2. Yoga Helps To Keep Me Living In the Now
I am impatient by nature and want everything yesterday. I have a tendency to rush around trying to fix everything and everyone. With three teenage daughters, life can be very hectic. My daily yoga practice encourages me to slow down, to breathe and allow space in my life for the goodness to unfold. To smell the roses and count the stars in the sky as I wait .... I am learning patience and that feels good.
3. Yoga Helps Me To Nurture My Inner Core
In yoga, you are encouraged to see your body as your physical temple. A vessel through which the divine can weave her magic and create miracles in your life. The more I practice yoga, the more in tune I become with my inner core. The more in tune I become, the greater my desire to do things which nurture me - to eat well, to exercise, to be kind to myself and to others.
4. Yoga Energises
My Soul Do you have days where you lack the motivation and drive to do anything? I definitely do. When I feel like this, I have a range of tools from my yoga practice which I draw upon. For example, I can go with the flow, practice a deep relaxation, or do some yoga exercises or breathing practices to re-vitalise and boost my energy.
5. Yoga Heals
Like most of you, there are days in my life when I am low. Like you, I have experienced my share of grief, loss and abandonment. During those times, my yoga practice and yoga teachings, give me the strength, insight and trust to know that All Is Well. Through yoga, meditation or even journalling exercises, I am able to release negative emotions and claim my right to be happy and live a live blessed with love and joy.
6. Yoga Stretches Me Out of My Comfort Zone
If you are like me, it can feel challenging to step out of your comfort zone and try something different. Practicing yoga encourages me to trust myself and to be aware of my inner potential to effect positive change in my life. Certain yoga poses, for instance, the headstand and tree pose are challenging for me. Yet, with practice, I now do these poses and gain tremendous benefit from the effect they have on my balance and perspective on life.
7. Yoga Gives Me Licence To Follow My Dreams
Do you know the song "Somewhere Over The Rainbow" - that's one of my favourite songs, especially Eva Cassidy's version. My love of yoga gave me the courage to resign from my employment as a Probation Officer, working with Young Offenders to follow my heart to write and teach yoga. To love your work and bring joy and healing to others is an honour which I am thankful to be able to do. I feel humble and in awe of the beautiful souls I meet and places I travel to in the name of work.
Thank You, for taking your time to listen while I share some of my personal life story and lessons learned from practicing yoga. I pray you are inspired to continue your yoga practice.
